Thankfully the ability to restore a complete HAMSHACK on Linux can now be completely contained on a small USB drive. No connection to the internet required!

Just head over to http://media.ne4rd.live/ and download the latest version of Ubuntu Budgie.

As previously stated, I separate my files from OS by putting them on their own USB stick. Any download that’s worth keeping is moved to the stick. If the system crashes there is no loss of data and I can run the OS on any computer in live mode with just two USB sticks.

That’s a highly mobile and redundant system considering you can be up and running on any computer in a matter of minutes!!!

The distro (ubuntu-budgie-20.04.1-2020.08.07-desktop-amd64.iso) comes packed with the following software:

As of 09-05-2020

Personally I only use the FLDigi Suite, JS8Call and CubicSDR as I do not log but CRQLOG is the nicest I’ve seen in any OS.

I do wish it came with CHIRP installed, but I can live without it if I must.

ADD ON SOFTWARE

There are a few nice add-ons that I will get if I have an internet connection and a permenant install on a hard drive, but they are not required to operate with this distro.

Via the default software package installer:

GIMP
GhostWriter

GitHub (this website install)

git clone https://github.com/K7JLJ/K7JLJ.com.git
git config –global user.name “name”
git config –global user.email “email”
git config –global color.ui auto
git add .
git commit -m “msg”

CHIRP

Unfortunately, Python2 packages have been removed from Ubuntu 20 so the normal easy install below will not work.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chirp-daily

Try using Flatpak for now:

https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/7607

sudo addgroup “$USERNAME” dialout
